Bhutan became a member of the UN in 1971. The UN intervened in a conflict involving Bhutan when violence erupted and many people fled to Nepal and the UN took many thousand Bhutanese refugees. About 100,00 live in refugee camps supervised by UN in Nepal and in other places around the world. Nepal and Bhutan are trying to get things to order again before elections with help of the UN. India has not allowed any refugees onto its territory but the US and other countries have accepted refugees with help of the UN. Bhutan’s armed forces started participating in UN peacekeeping missions in September 2014 .Officers from the Royal Bhutan Army and the Royal Bodyguard went to serve as peacekeepers in the Middle East and Africa. The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, met with the officers to say it is a proud moment for the country, and reflects support and commitment for the UN . In 2003 Bhutanese refugee women were cited by the UN for discrimination against women. Some women were being physically and sexually abused based on their gender. The citing included trafficking of women and girls and many other human violations.
