Legal Structure

Bhutan is ruled by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. He took his father’s place in December 2006. His coronation only took place in November 2008, after the country became a parliamentary democracy. King Jigme Wangchuck became head of state and promised to try and make Bhutan a democracy. His father gave up some of his absolute power and ruled with the government, an assembly, and also a royal advisory council. In November 2011 the king married a commoner (Jetsun Pema). Tshering Tobgay was elected Bhutan's second prime minister in July 2013.
