Bhutan's Geography

Bhutan is located at the eastern end of the Himalayas in Asia.  It is bordered to the north by China and to the south, east and west by India. To the west, it is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim, while further south it is separated from Bangladesh by the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Bhutan's capital and largest city is Thimphu.  Bhutan was isolated for centuries and only open for public not too long ago and because of the isolation Bhutan has one of the most intact ecosystems in the world. Some of its important physical characteristics are the Great Himalaya Range, Black Mountain Range, The Duars Plain,  and the Manas River.

The Great Himalaya Range is  the highest mountain range in the world. It has has 9 out of 10 of the world’s highest places  including Mount Everest. It also is the source of some of Asia’s major rivers. And an interesting fact is that it is  full of sacred natural sites like secret valleys and high mountain lakes that predate ancient Hinduism. And the  Manas River flows south from the Great Himalayas river in the Himalayan foothills. It is found between southern Bhutan and India. It is named after Manasa who is a serpent god in the Hindu mythology. And it’s length is 376 km.
